5Just get this bag end of story!
By Daniel
This bag is amazingly good for so many reasons. I have allot of bags as I travel for work and play, I have Tumi, Briggs and Riley, Camelbak, Samsonite, Chrome, Maxpedition and about 3 other brands and this bag is the best.I have spend over $600 on one Tumi bag trying to find the holy grail of bags and it was close, but The North Face Duffel is the best if you need a workhorse and not a show pony.I know in Australia a Camera Crew had 6 large North Face Duffels they used to travel constantly to hard places, and 10 years later the same 6 North Face Duffels are still being used! What I like about them - Water resistant, tough exterior, external carry handles, shoulder straps, protected bottom, can be lashed to a roof rack or motorbike, easy access to you stuff, strong zippers, great colours to identify on carousel - the last bags you will every buy because they are indestructible.Just get one you won't be sorry!!

4Durable, and the Medium is a useful size, but overpriced and obnoxious colours
By brh1976
I was in the market for a bag to replace a 20-year-old Samsonite duffel that I had taken around the world a couple of times but that was falling apart and beyond repair. The replacement candidates came down the North Face Base Camp and the Patagonia Black Hole. Both are very similar in that they are water-resistant duffels that have backpack straps. Both are about the same price, and for the larger (90 liter, 120 liter) and smaller (45 liter) sizes they have the same capacity. But the medium sizes are different: the Patagonia is 60 liters while the Base Camp is 72 liters.MEDIUM: BIG ENOUGH FOR EVERYTHING I NEED, SMALL ENOUGH TO COUNT AS CARRY-ONIt turns out that, for me, 72 liters is comfortably large enough to fit everything I need on a multi-month trip. While perhaps I could have fit everything into the 60 liter Patagonia, it would have been a tight fit and would have made carrying extra food virtually impossible. The one time I did fly with this bag on a North American airline that charged for checked baggage, I was able to take this on the plane as carry-on, and I was able to fit it into the overhead bin of a the larger plane, though it would not fit into the regional jet's bin.DURABILITYI don't fly that much, and I don't carry pointy things inside my bag, but I have found the Base Camp to be pretty durable. In six months of traveling the only issues were that the velcro on one of the straps has started to come off (they stitched too close to the edge of the velcro) and the luggage tag is starting to tear away from the stitches that hold it down to the bag. I dropped by my local North Face store and they say it can be repaired under warranty but it will take about 6 weeks, which seems like a long time.COLOURSI think the standard North Face colour schemes are obnoxious. There are some nicer colour combinations, but it seems they are both seasonal and regional. I bought mine in Hong Kong, where I was able to get it in Baja Blue & California Gold, and they also had a nice Thorn Green colour (it looked too similar to a military duffel for me to get it, though, since I didn't want any confusion given I was going to go to Afghanistan).WATER-PROOFNESSAs for the water-proofness, it's a mixed bag. The material itself is waterproof, and the zipper is covered by the top flap, so I wouldn't worry too much about carrying it around in the rain or letting it sit in the rain for a while. But the seams are not taped and will eventually let some liquid in if the bag is left to sit in liquid. I had this happen to me while my bag was on a bus in Mongolia: it was placed in the baggage compartment with some containers of airag (fermented mare's milk) that leaked during the journey, creating a small pool that sloshed around the compartment. The outside of the bag was wet when removed from the bus, and some of it did leak inside the bag. Not a lot, but some of my stuff was wet, so it's clearly not waterproof.PRICEThese are expensive, but so is the competition. If it lasts 20 years, it will be well worth the price, but it's still really expensive for what it is. The Samsonite duffel this bag replaced had three external compartments (two at the end, and one on the side), but this bag has only one internal zip compartment. This seems kind of ridiculous. Heck, Helly Hansen manages to make similar duffel bags with three compartments at a significantly cheaper price.IF YOU AREN'T BUYING THE MEDIUM SIZE, CONSIDER PATAGONIAFor me, the 72 liter size is perfect. Even at this size, however, the backpack straps aren't that comfortable. For larger size I suspect they're almost useless (and this goes for Patagonia as well). In my opinion, however, the Patagonia bags are probably better: Patagonia warranty service is generally impeccable; the Patagonia Black Hole has not only the zippered compartment on the inside of the flap but a zippered compartment accessible from the outside; I think the Black Hole colours are generally more attractive and less obnoxious than the North Face colours; and the Black Hole duffels have a layer of padding on the bottom that may protect your gear a little better and possibly offer more protection from moisture. On the other hand, the Patagonia bags lack compression straps and the fabric is somewhat lighter and possibly less durable (though I would have felt comfortable using it on my overland trip from Hong Kong to Istanbul).

5Excellent Bag
By M. Abbott
This is an excellent quality bag. In fact it is my 7th North Face base camp bag that I own. I purchased my first one (size small) 8 years ago. I loved it so much I purchased the Medium sized. Still loving it I purchased the Large one. They are all still in great shape and have been checked many times and never lost. No damage either. My family grew so I decided that I liked them so much that I wanted to have two of each size. So I got 3 more...SML...MED...LGE. Then my family was planning a long trip and we needed to pack lots of cloths and cold Wx gear. So I ordered another.! I now have seven. People always stop me and ask about them. They're great bags! Period! Strong and quality. I highly recommend you to give one a try. I bet you'll want another soon. I would start with the Medium. The small is good for an overnight bag. The Medium is good for a long weekend trip. The Large is good for extended trips of 1 to 2 weeks. My wife and I can pack into a single Large for a weekend trip, or sometimes we'll pack into 2 Mediums. We can get both our kids into a single Medium bag. That's why I decided on the 7th Medium. Now we can go with 3 mediums on our long weekend trips.
